DIY: Make a Jewelry Stand Using Paper Towel Rolls

In our last DIY article, I took you on a quick getaway to the sunny beaches of Rio 🇧🇷 I hope you enjoyed the trip! For this new workshop, the destination is much less exotic. In fact, we're heading closer to your recycling bin than to a paradise beach (wait, don't run off, you're going to love it!).

Zero-waste, upcycling, second-hand, and recycling are all the rage these days. So why not join in? Today, we're going to make a jewelry stand using your empty paper towel rolls! Who was the great thinker who said "nothing is lost, everything is transformed"? Well, we're about to prove them right.

Material list

To make this lovely cardboard stand and hang your watches, bracelets, and even your necklaces, you will need:

• 4 cardboard rolls
• a utility knife
• a pair of scissors
• fabric in the material and color of your choice
• a piece of cardboard measuring 11 cm x 7 cm
• a clear glue gun
• paper, magazines, newspapers, paper napkins

What we love most is the idea of creating something from very little. Here, quite simply, we'll repurpose everyday tools and materials you usually have at home. Nothing special to buy, just enjoy and have fun!

Now that you have everything you need, let's get down to business.

Making the jewelry stand in 13 steps

1. On the flat cardboard, trace two circles matching the diameter of the rolls' ends
2. Cut out these circles
3. Glue your chosen fabric onto the flat piece of cardboard, making sure not to cover the holes. Only one side will be visible, so if you're short on fabric, you don't need to cover both sides.
4. Trim any excess fabric if necessary
5. Place two rolls together to form a T-shape
6. Using the utility knife, notch the top roll where the rolls meet
7. Cut out a section of the cardboard roll so the second one can fit inside
8. Grab a new roll and repeat the process.
9. Take a third cardboard roll and cut it in two. Ideally, make one part larger than the other; it will look much nicer once fully assembled.
10. On these rolls, you can cut fringe into one end (the one that will rest on the flat cardboard with pre-cut holes). This will help keep the structure sturdy. Indeed, these two pieces will support the structure, acting as the pillars for your jewelry tree.

At this stage, you should have:

• Two cardboard rolls of the same size, notched, which will hold your accessories
• Two cardboard rolls (one cut in two) of different sizes that will serve as pillars and slip inside the other two, with one fringed end.

Hope you're following along, we're almost there! 😊

1. With a little dexterity, now wrap and glue fabric around all the rolls. Both the ones used as supports and the ones that will hold your jewelry. Be careful not to block the holes you cut out. Pro tip: to keep the fabric securely in place, don't hesitate to add some glue inside the tubes and tuck the fabric inside.
2. Using paper, stuff the two unnotched rolls. The idea behind this step is to reinforce the structure so the pillars are nice and sturdy, keeping your rings, pendants, and charms safely in place.
3. Finally, insert the pillar tubes inside the notched rolls.

Finishing touches

All that's left is to glue the smaller T onto the front of the flat cardboard covered with fabric in the first step by inserting the fringes into the hole. They need to come out on the other side. This will ensure a secure bond and make your creation sturdier.

Repeat the step by gluing the larger T right behind it, into the other hole.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are now the proud owner of a jewelry organizer made with your own two hands ✂️! What's absolutely brilliant is that you can customize these displays however you like. Add a support to store other items, use a patterned fabric for personalized gifts, add new sections... Have fun with it!

This lovely jewelry stand will be sturdy enough to showcase your watches, chains, as well as your cuffs and bangles.

If you want to hang your earrings, nothing's stopping you from making a hole in one of the tubes to slide in your pendant clasps, or adding a small tray to hold your stud earrings in "organized chaos."
