  • How not to lose your earrings: 6 tips to help you

    Alice de Maison Scarlett

Our jewellery, just like our leather goods and shoes, is a true treasure. To feel beautiful and powerful, we love playing with it and pairing pieces together to create truly unique looks. Earrings are especially important because, positioned near the face and therefore at eye level for the person we are speaking to, they are among the first things people notice. However, this little piece of jewellery is also easily lost, leaving the other half of its pair all alone. If you tell us you have never felt that intense frustration of having to search everywhere for a missing earring, we will not believe you. To save you from this painful experience, we had already shared 6 tips for storing your jewellery, but today we are focusing on earrings, the star piece of any self-respecting jewellery collection.

Making storage part of your routine

Earrings are probably the women’s accessories that are easiest to lose. No matter the type of clasp or the size of the piece of jewelry in question, the number-one tip—and we can never say it enough—is to store your drop earrings properly. A pair of hoops, stud earrings, or even a piercing: this whole little world should go in a jewelry box that closes securely or, at the very least, be hung on a reliable jewelry stand. Your semi-precious stone jewelry, as well as your white gold rings, solid silver necklaces, and emerald pendant, absolutely do not deserve to end up on the edge of a sink, exposed to danger. So adopt one simple habit that can change the course of history: store them in suitable boxes or on suitable displays. Careful, we’re watching you!

Choosing the right pair of earrings

Today, our ear jewellery comes in many styles, sizes and materials. While some of us can wear anything, others have much more selective earlobes. Some pairs of earrings can be very heavy and stretch your earlobe; others, being too long, can become uncomfortable throughout the day, forcing you to take them off. And when you are not at home, taking off your earrings means slipping them into your wallet, thinking it is a good idea. Or putting them in the back pocket of your jeans, telling yourself, “they are safe here”. Not at all! Our little tip if this happens to you is to always keep a small jewellery case in your handbag for any jewellery you may not be able to wear all day. However, the best advice is still to choose jewellery suited to your ears, so the problem will not arise.

The most suitable storage solution: an earring holder

Alright, we told you above that a jewelry box is essential. And it’s true! But to be completely honest, a jewelry stand remains the storage accessory best suited to earrings. In a jewelry box, you place all your jewelry, from your pendant to your bangles. Although a jewelry case has the advantage of protecting your treasures from dust, it does not allow you to properly separate and hang your earrings. Everything gets mixed up, everything knocks together if it is not well compartmentalized and, over time, this damages your jewelry collection. With an earring holder, you will be able to choose your earrings more quickly.

    Choosing the fastening

Essential for ensuring your pair of earrings stays secure while you wear them, it is important to know the different types of fastenings to prevent losing an earring.

    • The fork clasp system: this type of clasp needs to be checked and tightened regularly, but it requires gentle handling so as not to damage your stainless steel hoop earrings with a fork clasp.
    • Huggie earrings: you will need to realign the post so that it clicks properly into the earring. The little “click” will tell you it is securely closed.
    • Screw-back butterfly clasps: whether costume earrings or precious white gold hoop earrings set with diamonds, many earrings feature this fairly secure type of clasp. However, you need to screw them on carefully to avoid damaging the threading.

    All your jewellery has value

A favourite accessory for women, earrings come in a thousand and one styles. The most precious pieces in your jewellery collection, set with lapis lazuli, sapphire, ruby or even emerald, diamonds or topaz, are generally the ones we cherish most. Yet costume earrings, in gold plating, stainless steel or even zirconium oxide—whether feathered, glittery, gold-toned, cat-shaped, hoops or studs—deserve just as much attention. It is true that coral, steel, silver or brass are not as precious. Yet these pieces of jewellery generally have sentimental value, and it is always painful to lose one of them.

So be sure to choose styles with secure fastenings and, above all, store them carefully on suitable displays, such as jewellery trees.

    Reusing single earrings

Even the most organized and careful among us can one day find themselves faced with having lost one half of their precious jewelry collection. So, for all those who have, somewhere in one of their jewelry boxes, orphan earrings—whether a cultured pearl or a small gold hoop—if they are destined to end up in the trash the day you finally work up the courage, stop everything!

Mixing and stacking are on trend. Today, earrings are even sold individually or as mismatched pairs. By having fun mixing your single earrings, you will be right on trend. Plus, it is an excellent way to express your identity and uniqueness

In the end, even on their own, our earrings still make us dream.

Finally, we could tell you that it is essential to take off your earrings when you go swimming, take a shower or play a contact sport. It is also highly recommended not to sleep wearing your earrings (but do not leave them unprotected on your bedside table either, given the risks). And above all, whether they are dangling earrings or studs, be sure to remove them before getting undressed. It may seem obvious, but we are sometimes tempted to say, “Oh, just this once,” and that “one time” could be responsible for losing one of the pieces of jewellery you hold dear… You have been warned!
